15 I know your works. You are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. 16 So because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I’m about to spit you out of my mouth
Revelation 3:15-16 Common English Bible (CEB)
In this verse, John uses the angle of being hot and cold. The cold could repent refreshing, while hot resents healing. John is writing this to the church of Laodicea. The city of Laodicea was proud of its wealth. They had the best economy around and didn’t need any help from other cites. John uses the example of the water supply so that they could understand. In their city, they used the water supply for textile construction and plumbing. When he references God spitting it out of his mouth, he’s talking about the lukewarm water. Which is referring to the water supply of Laodicea, it would be like them drinking for the water supply of construction and plumbing. So what does lukewarm mean? In the religious term, I would say to know God but lack the real faith to be fully engaged with him. It's like you are in the middle. God does not want us to be in between; he wants us to fully be willing to serve him. There's one verse that says you can’t serve the world and God (Matt 6:24). So, God gives us free will to do whatever we want to do. He’s not going to force you to do anything. However, God does draw near to you, only if you draw near to him. We are not meant to serve the world. That’s why God wants us to surrender fully to him so that he can use you. Be either cold or hot; embrace what God has called you to be. Don’t be lukewarm because it serves no purpose. Don’t be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:2)
